the lowdown - supporting young people

Bullying

Bullying is behaviour which causes someone else to feel hurt, threatened, scared or intimidated. It can happen to children, young people and adults and may be a one-off incident or go on for a long time. Bullying can take many forms, including hitting, name calling, rumours, teasing, fighting, stealing from, ignoring, physical threats and cyber bullying (through texting or the internet). There are many reasons why individuals start to bully; however, bullying is always unacceptable behaviour.

You are not alone

Every seven seconds, someone in Britain is being bullied. 69% of parents reported that their child had been bullied in the past 12 months. Bullying is responsible for 30-50% of all stress related illness in the workplace. Approximately 160,000 children and young people miss school/college daily from fear of bullying. At least 20 children every year commit suicide because they are being bullied.
