the lowdown - supporting young people

Drugs & Alcohol

Drugs can come in both legal and illegal forms. These can include pills, solvents, aerosols, alcohol, cigarettes, tranquilizers, herbs, mushrooms and powder, all of which may be known under several different names and can all become physically or psychologically addictive.

They are taken for a variety of reasons including pleasure, pain relief, feelings of escapism or habit. Drugs and alcohol can affect your immediate or long term health, finances, behaviour, education, job or relationships.

You are not alone

Drugs, alcohol and other addictions affect millions of people all over the world. Each of our bodies are unique and will therefore react to drugs and alcohol in different ways. If you’re concerned about the use of or dependency on drugs or alcohol, there is help and support available.

People who abuse can be family or people you know well, which is confusing. They can make you feel guilty, ashamed and to blame for what is happening. You are not to blame.
