Homelessness
Being homeless means not having a suitable, safe or permanent place to call home. It doesn’t only mean living on the streets or sleeping rough. Sometimes young people feel there is no choice but to leave home because of family problems. If this is the case then there is information you need first.
The law on leaving home in the UK (Feb 2010)
18 and over:
No permission from parents is needed to leave
16-17 years:
Permission from parents or guardians is needed, however if you leave home
without it, you are unlikely to be ordered back home unless you’re at risk whilst
away from home.
Under 16:
Anyone under 16 and not in any danger at home cannot legally leave.
However, there may be circumstances or situations where you feel leaving
home is the only option. If this is the case, then please contact us or one of the
organisations listed below for help and support.
