the lowdown - supporting young people

Sexual Health

Everyone has a responsibility to take care of their own overall physical and emotional care, which includes their sexual health. This means ensuring that you are ready, comfortable and have made your own decision about when to have sex. Finding out the facts about sex, contraception and the risks of unprotected sex; STI’s (sexually transmitted infections), and pregnancy, is a responsible thing to do and shows self respect and respect for your partner.

You are not alone

If you have unprotected sex you are putting yourself at risk of contracting an STI. Many young people who have an STI are unaware, as most people do not display any symptoms. The high number of teenage pregnancies and levels of STI’s in young people within the UK could mean that not everyone is fully aware of sexual health information. There are a lot of myths around sexual health and it can feel difficult or embarrassing to ask questions to find out more, however The Northamptonshire NHS told us that young people within Northamptonshire find the lowdown to be one of the easiest places to access support in sexual health.
