Some smokers consider that cigarettes can help them to feel less stressed or as a way of enjoying a shared experience with friends. Nicotine is an addictive substance which affects individuals in different ways. It’s estimated that approximately 10 million people smoke in the UK and 114,000 die each year from smoking-related illness. Cigarettes cannot be legally sold in the UK, to anyone under the age of 18yrs old.

People smoke for variety of reasons like relieving stress, habit, peer pressure, socializing and addiction. Many smokers actually want to give up for health or financial reasons but find it very hard. The addiction to nicotine and the habit means that stopping smoking can cause withdrawal symptoms including feeling irritable, feeling restless and having disturbed sleep.
